My Agents Love to Conform: Emotions, Norms, and Social Control in Natural and Artificial Societies

چکیده
This contribution investigates the function of emotion in relation to social norms, both in natural and artificial societies. First, the authors briefly illustrate that norms as socially shared mental objects play a crucial role in the dynamics of social structures and social order, in natural societies as well as in artificial systems. Second, the authors address the question how norms are enforced and thereby maintained throughout a social system. In this respect, it is shown that emotions play a crucial role by providing means for intrinsic gratification and sanctioning. The authors consider emotion related sanctions as a cost equivalent to and in many situations perhaps even more efficient than, e.g., resource-driven penalties. Consequently, agents’ anticipation of negative emotional outcomes as a consequence of deviant behaviour is supposed to exert social control. Third, the authors outline the possibilities of an application to the socionic multi-agent architecture SONAR

My agents love to conform: Norms and emotion in the micro-macro link
This contribution investigates the function of emotion in relation to norms, both in natural and artificial societies. We illustrate that unintentional behavior can be normative and socially functional at the same time, thereby highlighting the role of emotion. Conceiving of norms as mental objects we then examine the role of emotion in maintaining and enforcing such propositional attitudes. Th...
متن کاملIntroducing Emotions into the Computational Study of Social Norms: A First Evaluation
We argue that modelling emotions among agents in artificial societies will further the computational study of social norms. The appraisal theory of emotions is presented as theoretical underpinning of Jon Elster’s view that social norms are sustained not only by material sanctions but also by emotions such as shame and contempt. Appraisal theory suggests the following twofold relationship betwe...

متن کاملA categorization of simulation works on norms
In multi-agent systems, software agents are modelled to possess characteristics and behaviour borrowed from human societies. Norms are expectations of behaviours of the agents in a society. Norms can be established in a society in different ways. In human societies, there are several types of norms such as moral norms, social norms and legal norms (laws). In artificial agent societies, the desi...
متن کاملSocial Norms for Self-Policing Multi-agent Systems and Virtual Societies
Social norms are one of the mechanisms for decentralized societies to achieve coordination amongst individuals. Such norms are conflict resolution strategies that develop from the population interactions instead of a centralized entity dictating agent protocol. One of the most important characteristics of social norms is that they are imposed by the members of the society, and they are responsi...
